👻 You Can Be Seen Without Leaving a Trail
Here's a fear a lot of people have before they ever tap Go Live for the first time: "wait, does this mean strangers now know where I live, where I park, and where I was three Tuesdays ago?"
No. That's exactly the gap Ghost Mode was built to close.
Go Live and Ghost Mode solve two different problems. Go Live decides whether you're discoverable right now. Ghost Mode decides what happens to that session after it's over. People mix the two up constantly, so let's actually separate them.
🧭 What Go Live Does (Quick Recap)
Before Ghost Mode makes sense, you need the baseline. When you tap Go Live, your car becomes visible to other users within your set radius (2km by default), not the whole map, not your followers list, just people physically close enough to actually run into you. That session ends automatically after a set window. Nobody is watching a live feed of your car all day by default.
Go Live is opt-in every time. Nothing about your car shows up on anyone's map unless you turn it on.
🔒 What Ghost Mode Actually Hides
Ghost Mode is the layer that controls what's left over once a session ends. Turn it on and here's what happens after you stop:
- No route history. Wherever you drove during that session, the path itself doesn't persist anywhere a user can scroll back through.
- No feed record. The session won't show up as a post, a card, or an activity item in anyone's feed.
- No search trace. Someone looking you up afterward won't find "was live near downtown at 9pm Tuesday" sitting on your profile.
- No session history on your own profile view either. It's not just hidden from others, it's not retained as a visible artifact at all.
The practical result: you can go live, get spotted, cruise for however long, then have that entire session disappear the moment it ends. No digital breadcrumb trail back to your driveway, your usual routes, or your schedule.
🚦 What Ghost Mode Doesn't Do
This is the part people get wrong, so it's worth being blunt about it.
Ghost Mode does not make you invisible while you're actually live. If you're driving with Go Live on, users inside your radius can still see your car in real time, that's the entire point of turning it on in the first place. Ghost Mode isn't a way to be discoverable and untraceable at the same time; it's a way to make sure nothing outlives the moment.
It also isn't a workaround for using the app while driving. Spota is built around parked, safe, legal activity: Photo Ops, garage updates, collectibles. Nothing about Ghost Mode changes that. Pull over before you're tapping around in the app, live session or not.
And it's not a substitute for basic common sense about your daily patterns. If you go live from the exact same spot on the exact same schedule every single week, Ghost Mode erasing the session record afterward doesn't erase the pattern in people's memory. Privacy tools handle data. They don't handle habits.
🧠 When Car People Actually Use It
A few situations where flipping on Ghost Mode makes sense:
- Cruising near home. You want to be part of the local scene on a drive, but you don't want a permanent record of a route that ends at your house.
- Testing new mods. Shaking down a new exhaust or suspension setup and don't want a session tied to it sitting in your history for anyone reviewing your garage timeline.
- One-off visibility. You want to be seen for tonight's cruise, not build a pattern that a stranger could map out over a few weeks of casual scrolling.
- Just being cautious by default. Some users run Ghost Mode on every session out of habit, treating "be seen, leave nothing behind" as their normal setting rather than an exception.
Spota tip: Ghost Mode and a shorter live radius work well together. Tightening your visibility radius controls who can see you during the session; Ghost Mode controls what's left after. Stack both if you want maximum control without turning Go Live off entirely.
🔍 Ghost Mode vs. Just Not Going Live
If Ghost Mode erases a session anyway, why not just skip Go Live altogether? Because they solve different needs. Not going live means nobody sees your car moving in real time, full stop, which is fine if you're not trying to be part of the live local scene that day. Ghost Mode is for the opposite situation: you want the in-the-moment visibility (getting spotted, being part of a cruise, showing up on the map for the people around you right now) without the long tail of a searchable history.
One is "don't show up at all." The other is "show up, then vanish."

Go live, get spotted, cruise the scene. Then let Ghost Mode make sure that's all it ever was: a moment, not a paper trail.
